One of the most unexpected problems with many diet shakes is that they often contain a lot of sugar, or artificial sweetener. It’s always worth checking the label to see exactly how much sugar your diet shake has. In many cases you’ll find that sugar is listed as one of the top three ingredients!
As with most things in life you get what you pay for, if you buy cheap diet shakes the quality of the ingredients are going to reflect that. Many branded diet shakes are packed with ingredients that deliver a lot of flavour but very little nutrition…. and can even be extremely harmful to your health.
Refined Vegetable Oil
Probably one of the most harmful ingredients regularly found in diet shakes is refined vegetable oil.
Studies have linked refined vegetable oil to toxicity of the liver, lowered immune system and learning disabilities. It is also reported to discharge poisonous cancer-causing chemical compounds into the body.
Another ingredient commonly found in diet shakes is maltodextrin. This has a very high glycemic index and can cause serious health issues which affect blood sugar levels and immune system.
Ironically enough maltodextrin is also linked to weight gain.
Your Body will fight back… and make you fatter!
When it comes to diet shakes the problem goes much deeper than poor quality ingredients. Diet shakes (and indeed many diets) often promote weight loss by cutting out a food group altogether. When that happens the body automatically shifts into survival mode.
For example, if you cut fat from your diet your body will believe that there is a shortage of fat available to you. As a result, it will start to change the way it processes fat in order to store more of it the next time you eat some.
This is a survival mechanism that works very well for a hunter gather, when days could go by between meals. But In the modern world, where an abundance of food is readily available, this system plays havoc on your ability to maintain good health and to lose weight.
The yo-yo weight loss/gain diet shake cycle
In many cases the problem is exacerbated because diet shakes do make your thinner in the short term, so you believe they are working. But the short term weight loss is definitely not worth the long-term damage to your body or the mid-term damage to your ongoing weight loss efforts. One of the ways that your body compensates for reduced food intake is to slow down your metabolism. This means that it will be more difficult for you to lose weight in future and you’ll begin getting fatter sooner!
So what do you do when you start to pile on the pounds? Well the diet shakes ‘seemed’ to work last time so you reach for them again and the cycle continues! I wouldn’t blame anybody for believing that the entire diet shake industry is a conspiracy designed to make your weight yo-yo so you keep coming back for more.
Green Smoothies give your body what it needs
The trick to real sustained long-term weight loss is to have a balanced diet and to make sure your body is getting all the vitamins and minerals that it needs.
Green smoothies are a fantastic alternative to diet shakes because they are loaded with antioxidants and vitamins. When you consume high quality food your body is able to get the nutrients that it’s craving more easily. However if your body is lacking essential nutrients it will cause you to feel more hungry in the hope that when you eat, it will get the nutrients it so desperately needs. This is one the reasons that green smoothies are so filling. They contain exactly what your body is craving.
It’s also the reason that an hour after a takeaway you’re often ready for more!
If you’d like to give green smoothies a try, and lose weight then I recommend the Green Smoothie 7 Day Diet plan…
